Although wanting of a few more upbeat moments, its nice to say that Kimbra has finally arrived. Soulful, jazzy and with brilliant, but earnest lyrics, the album is a solid debut effort. Diverse and versatile, the Kimbra you hear with Gotye is different to the voice you hear on the Miami Horror track and her voice is different again on Vows. The Build Up, does exactly as the title suggests, but its relatively short and happens twice. The final song, which also includes a hidden track is soothing, yet with solemn undertones. Withdraw could be compared to Amy Winehouse, it’s soulful and somber sounding. Adding the beautiful voice of Sam Lawrence on a duet, was a great move, the two voices combine to make a stunning soul track. ![]() Having said that, Wandering Limbs is something special. Not that it’s bad, but I personally think Kimbra is at her best, when singing livelier pop songs. But after that its back to a deeper sound. With interest rejuvenated, Limbo is just as fun and as jazzy as its predecessor. Of the slower tracks, Plain Gold Ring is one of the highlights.Ĭall Me is overdue at this stage, worn out from a lack of upbeat tracks, the injection of more pop jazz is appreciated and it almost sounds like early Destiny’s Child. Kimbra’s vocals are spectacular in Plain Gold Ring, the minimalist beats put her voice in the spotlight. KIMBRA ALBUM REVIEW SERIESYou could almost see her performing this song in the HBO series Boardwalk Empire. Good Intent is more jazzy, Kimbra gets her trademark cabaret voice out, an ever-present theme throughout Vows. Old Flame is a little more brooding, as the tempo gradually increases. To Way Street is a sweet, slow buring love song, “but the moment you appear , you wake me, wake me, wake me, out of the slumbers of my head , from the slums of loneliness”. Settle Down and Cameo Lover are the albums best pop songs, as four slower tracks ensues. ![]() Settle Down is upbeat, layered with vocals and hand claps, incporating more sound through the chorus. “I wanna raise a child, Won’t you raise a child with me”. The album could be described as her love confessions. With Settle Down being the opener and the album title being Vows, you could assume that the 21 year old is ready to get hitched. The period between The Golden Echo and Primal Heart was certainly a tumultuous time to be a Kimbra, or anybody aware of their surroundings for that matter. With her debut album Vows, the Kiwi singer-songwriter is well on her way to establashing a passionate fan base and garnering critical acclaim. Review Summary: The sounds of people you used to know become the sounds of somebody you ought to know. She’s been touted as the next big thing in music for years, performing the national anthem in front of thousands from as young as 12 for a rugby final, Kimbra has achieved commercial success with Miami Horror’s, I Look to You and more recently topping the Aussie charts with Gotye’s Somebody I used to Know.
